Stephen Hyde introduced himself as our speaker today. Retired guidance counselor, educator in various towns in this area. Shader Croft was founded in 2021 as an educational non profit for “at risk children” focused on a single academic focus: literacy (reading, writing and speaking).
The Mission statement of the school is to help students develop effective literacy and communication skills by valuing their interests and connecting them to the world around them in real and meaningful ways.
Summer months are a contributor to the “Achievement Gap” which is 2.5 to 3 years in development at the end of fifth grade. Wealthier children have an advantage over poorer students because there are more opportunites for them during the summer months, when they are not in school.
Students select an interest of their choice, receive academic and community support for these interests and learn practical and social skills to develop the interest. They incorporate the three r’s, it should be relevant to the students, related their interests and dreams and be able to provide rigorous opportunities to learn and practice new skills.
Jim Donovan presented the book “Middle School Matters” by Phyllis L. Fagell that will be donated in his name to the Hinesburg Library.
Meeting was adjourned at 8:30.
