January 15th Meeting
We needed to flip our meeting today to accommodate our speaker. State Representative Shawn Sweeney came to us via Zoom because he needed to be at the Statehouse for an 8:00 AM meeting hence we started off our Rotary meeting with Shawn presenting at 7:30am. Shawn talked about how incredibly happy and proud he is to be a new member of the Vermont State Legislature. He was sworn in on Wednesday, January 8th and he was appointed to the House Corrections and Institutions Committee. He also was elected by his committee to serve as Clerk. He is still learning what the issues are that his committee will be taking up in the coming year but he is excited to be there and dig in to the many important topics. He has also joined the Rural Caucus, and a special committee looking at how to address the many concerns of Vermonters regarding high property taxes supporting our education system. Shawn is engaged and anxious to reach across the aisle to Republicans and work together with the Democrats to come forward with moderate proposals; high quality and fiscally prudent.
Second, we heard from the Membership Committee, Carole Georges, on how the larger club can be most helpful as we work to attract new members. Carole updated us on the importance of materials to provide whenever the Rotary is out in the community volunteering and/or fundraising. The committee is requesting that the Public Image Committee assist with a public facing calendar. Updated brochures and information should be available at our Pie for Breakfast event. The Public Image Committee will also take a look at the one page Rotary information sheet to be given out to all guests who attend our meetings.
Amanda Vincent, our President updated the club with regard to our Community Needs Assessment project and the group decided with a discussion led by Richard Fox that a visioning session would be most helpful on this important endeavor.
Amanda also updated the club on the importance of Pies for Breakfast which is scheduled for march 15th and our fundraising goal is $10,000 so we are hoping for everyone’s help!
The meeting concluded with a quick round of happy fines!
