Announcements

Shelburne’s 250th Anniversary

Linda Gilbert circulated a sign-up sheet for volunteers to man the Rotary Information Booth at the Shelburne Day on August 17th. So far she has only one name. There is also a requirement to grill and sell food for the Hands to Honduras portion of the booth and she still needs a few more. The market lasts from 9-3 and sign ups can be for any period during those times.

Rotary volunteers have been asked to park behind the Methodist Church on the day.

Roz Graham called for volunteers to help set up the staging and dividers for the street dance to be held in the Shelburne Shopping Park on the evening of August 17th.

Bill Deming is coordinating the volunteers needed for the BBQ to be served on the Parade after the Town Photo to be completed by 3:30 on August 18th. The volunteers are needed at the ticket table and as servers.

Charlotte Senior Center Summer BBQ

Linda Gilbert announced the need for two more volunteers to help prepare, serve and clean up at the Charlotte Senior Center Annual Summer BBQ on August 23rd. This has been a annual requirement and has always resulted in our members having more fun than the attendees. Volunteers also get to eat for free. Times are 5-8 or 8:30. A list was circulated

Rotary T-Shirts

John Hammer was selling the new club T-shirts at this meeting.  They are dark blue with the name of the club encircling the Rotary wheel in gold. They are on sale for $7 and will be sold at the next few meetings including just before the “meeting” at Camp TaKumTa. They come in Ladies Medium, Large, and a few Extra Large.  Men’s sizes come in Large and Extra Large. They will also be on sale at the next meeting in expectation that many members will wear them at the 250th.

Camp Ta Kum Ta

Terrill Titus thanked all those who participated in the Camp Ta Kum Ta breakfast experience.  She emphasized how important the work was for the children who are able to spend a week away from the worry and stress of living with cancer and its sometimes uncomfortable cure regimen.

Jim Spadaccini in Oklahoma

Sam Feitelberg received a long letter from Jim Spadaccini written on his brand new computer in his new retirement.  He is extremely happy with his new home out there in Edmonds, Oklahoma. The recent wedding of one of his grandchildren out there came off without a hitch. Even though he is now retired, his brain still wakes him at 6AM.  He sent his regards to everyone.

Happy Fines

Richard Fox was absent and Terrill Titus very ably took over.

Terrill Titus – Will be biking 150 miles next weekend and she solicited sponsorship. She will be riding with her sister Cathy who has MS in a ride to raise awareness and help find a cure for MS. Many persons donated to the pot today, which in the end, at the suggestion of Gary Marcotte, was turned over to Terrill. Donations can also be made to her through her Facebook page.

Gary Marcotte  – Is going on a vacation, but can’t figure out how to do it.

Howard Seaver – Will be visited by eldest daughter, her husband and his only grandchild for a couple of weeks.

Chris Davis – Sorry to have missed Camp Ta Kum Ta as he was spending a great weekend in Boston. Also glad to see the reps from the Shelburne Fire Department to tell us about their new marine program.

Dave Jonah – His son, Will, is having a great time in Italy.

Mark Joczik – Had a good visit to Charleston and his two kids are in camp for two weeks, so he is looking forward to some peace.

Linda Schiavonne – Happy to see the firefighters here today.

George Schiavonne – Happy for Will Jonah’s good time in Italy and for the firefighters.

Bob Sanders – Great vacation in Maine.

Dave Gladstone (Guest) – Had a wonderful trip to the Eastern Mediterranean where he managed to leave Egypt the day before the coup. He hoped that Will took a lot of money because the prices there are so high in Italy.

Terry Kennaugh – Wonderful reunion with friends.

Tod Whitaker – For this great summer.

Fritz Horton – Grandchildren are coming this Friday.

Alan Hathaway – Great weekend with his daughter and son in law.

Joan Lennes – Happy to see David Gladstone here. She followed a car into Rotary this morning whose license plate read Glad and she was happy to see that it was David’s when they parked side-by-side.

Roz Graham – Spent yesterday at Okemo Ski Resort, where she visited with the Vermont Attractions organization. Great summer programs there. She also noted that there will be a concert at Shelburne Farms tonight.

Robert Maynes – Enjoyed a boat trip to Montreal.

Terrill Titus – Beautiful concert last weekend at Shelburne Farms.

Noel Nelson – For a wonderful visit with her sister and family.

Linda Barker – Sorry to miss Camp TKT and enjoyed the Dragonboat races last weekend.

Kris Engstrom – Had a too short and wonderful time with her two grandsons.

Linda Gilbert – For a house full of company with her sister, Noel and family plus lots of cousins up from NY.

Denny Bowen – Mentioned a donation program today at Café Uno with 20% going to Women Helping Battered Women.

Alan Hathaway’s number was called and he drew the 2 of Hearts.  Roll over the pot of $78.

Speakers – Jim Buell and Dwight Mazur from the Shelburne Volunteer Fire Department (SVFD). (Chris Davis, who was to speak on the Meach Cover Farm kindly relinquished the time for the SVFD to speak.  It should be noted that Chris is the Fire Chief for the Charlotte Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services – CVFRS.)

Buell and Mazur presented SVFD’s new marine division consisting of two boats, Marine 1 & 4 (Marine 2 & 3 are the CVFRS’s boats). Marine 4 is a 16’ Zodiac Hurricane RIB* and Marine 1 is the new 23’ Boston Whaler with a 5’ dive door on the port side. Marine 1 is the SVFD’s newest vessel and was purchased by the town for about $43,230 and the department is trying to raise $26,036 in funds to outfit the boat and six rescue divers.  The boat was purchased as salvage from the USN and formerly served with the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service. The role of the SVFD is to provide emergency services for all calls in Shelburne and to support other emergency services both in Shelburne and in neighboring towns.

Marine 1 is built to be unsinkable and has a water level dive door which can easily be utilized to pull people from the water, particularly those who are injured and are lashed to a floating “body board.”  It was noted that the Coast Guard is not authorized to go into the water in Lake Champlain or other Vermont inland waters, so this task falls to the fire and rescue departments around the lake.  The departments surrounding the lake in Shelburne and to the south have formed a collaborative organization to coordinate swimmers, radio frequencies, back up, and other important functions. The Coast Guard  “owns” the lake and all rescue efforts are channeled through them via Portland, Maine.  A 911 or Channel 16 call goes immediately to the Coast Guard who immediately shares it with their commander in Maine and the local rescue and fire services, so the incident is simultaneously coordinated. The Cost Guard will respond to save the vessel (though they leave towing to private contractors).  They may throw rescue apparatus’s to a swimmer, but may not enter the water except in extremis.  SVFD maintains that they can have their boat mobilized and underway within 7 minutes of an alarm.  Marine 2 is trailerable and may be used in rivers and ponds.

A number of our members expressed gratitude for all that the SVFD and CVFRS do for our communities.
