Announcements

2013-2014 Budget Approved

Russ Blodgett presented the 2013-4 Budget. Its approval was passed unanimously. The budget is posted on the Club website.

Mentoring Opportunity

Joan Lennes mentioned the Connecting Youth call for mentors that was circulated last week by Email. Anyone interested might contact Christine Lloyd Dobson who is the Shelburne Central School coordinator.

Shelburne Veterans’ Memorial

President Dave presented a check for $800 to Mike Lynch, Chairman of the Shelburne Veterans’ Memorial Committee for use in helping to plan the design for the memorial.  The memorial is to consist of a raised star and surrounding benches on which the public may sit. It will be located beside the Falls Road about 20 yards north of its intersection with Church Street. Each of the wars in the 20th and 21st Century will have a plaque. Individuals will not be recognized because of potential for failing to recognize persons. There will be paving bricks that can be sponsored to list any given name. Construction is anticipated for late next summer or the following spring.

Shelburne Nature Trail Brush Work

Michael Clapp reported that Denny Bowen, George Schiavonne and Trafton Crandall joined him last Saturday to cut brush on the nature trail. The chipper provided was insufficiently large for the job and the town will undertake to get a larger machine.

Volunteer Activities

Michael Clapp also reported that the Charlotte Central School composting building will require about another day’s work. The school in Hinesburg is lobbying for a garden shed, but Michael thinks it’s too late for this fall season. We will consider it next spring.

Car Raffle

Ric Flood announced that Car Raffle ticket sales have about 72-3 confirmed. Ten or fifteen others are always late, which leaves about 12 left to sell. The alternative for the next 2 ½ weeks is to get out to sell the Pumpkin Raffle Tickets. Each Rotarian is asked to sell at least 3 or more and we can then make it. He and Robert Maynes will be calling the traditionally late buyers. Nevertheless, there will be lots of opportunities to sell tickets and he expects that we will need quite a few “pumpkin Raffle” tickets sold. He had enough for a drawing today.  Rebecca Manchester, sold a ticket by Richard Fox, won the ball. This year’s tickets will be $275.

It is important for those who are gathering the door prizes to get both the top and bottom filled out. The bottom is torn off and given the donor. This will greatly reduce the admin workload. Door prizes should go to Colleen Haag at the Shelburne Town Offices ASAP.

Shelburne Halloween Parade

Dave Rive is looking for a few more Halloween Parade balloon blower-uppers for 8AM on October 27th. He could use one or two more to help set up tables, chairs and the popcorn machine at the firehouse at 1 PM.

A Remote Jim Spad Submission

A florist went to his barber on Monday and got a haircut. When he asked what he owed, the barber replied, “It’s free, I’m not taking money this week, it’s my community service.” The next day the barber came to work and found 12 roses and a thank you note on his doorstep.

That day, a cop came in and received the same treatment. As luck would have it the barber reported for work on Wednesday and found 12 donuts and a thank you note on the doorstep.

Well, who should appear on Wednesday but the local congressman. He also got a free haircut, but the next day when the barber reported to work and there were 12 congressmen on his doorstep.

And that points out the similarity between politicians and diapers. Both must be changed often and for the same reason.

This was followed up by an iPhone joke from heaven knows where. It seems that the person emailing the message had thought to dress up like a politician but was really disturbed because he couldn’t find a costume to fit. He couldn’t find one that allowed him to get his head up his {hmmm} – nether regions.
