Our speaker was new member Jessica Brumstead, recently elected to her first term as Representative for Shelburne & St. George to the VT Legislature.  Jessica first spoke about her background (in effect, her classification talk):  She was born in R.I., went to UVM and has lived in VT for 30 years.  She worked in Senator Jeffords’ office, and later at UVM.  She has 4 children (3 in college) and 3 step-children.

Jessica then spoke about her initial experiences in, and observations about the Legislature.  She’s a member of the Government Operations Committee and discussed several of the current issues before that Committee, among which are:  (1) Should Town Clerk and Town Treasurer be the same person; (2) Should State reduce the number of employees in those departments where there have been consistent vacancies; (2) How should marijuana be regulated; (4) Update of vital records law, to allow easier, but securer access to a person’s birth certificate, etc.; (5) How to structure paid family leave; (6) Current uncertainty of federal funding.

Jessica’s general impression is that VT’s Legislature lacks the partisanship currently present in Washington.

Upcoming meetings:
3/15  CVU Partners in Adventure and Hands to Honduras.
3/21  Board meeting
3/22  Bill Shouldice, CEO VT Teddy Bear
3/29  Bob Roper, Pres. Ethan Allen Institute
