Speaker: Jim Donovan – International Council on Monuments and Sites

The Council is a part of UNESCO, which the US stopped funding about eight years ago, and withdrew from completely in the past year or so. Nonetheless, the Council is made up of volunteer committees in roughly 110 nations, and because the US committee is made up of volunteers, it is still a member of the group. The Council engages in identifying, preserving, and strengthening the viability of world heritage sites.

From Wikipedia:

“A World Heritage Site is a landmark or area which is selected by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as having cultural, historical, scientific or other form of significance, and is legally protected by international treaties. The sites are judged important to the collective interests of humanity.”

Jim’s wife, Patricia, has served on a related committee focused on cultural landscapes for more than 20 years. After attending some of these meetings with Patricia, Jim learned of the opportunity to offer his expertise related to site planning, impact analysis, transport and circulation matters as they pertain to tourism at world heritage sites. He has since participated in meetings in France, Italy, the Philippines, Thailand, India, Ecuador and the Seychelles. Jim is currently planning a meeting with a Montreal colleague that would take place in Vermont and Montreal this fall (local sponsors welcome!).
