Notes of Meeting, February 14, 2018

President Eric opened the meeting at 0730, wished us a Happy Valentine’s Day, and led the
pledge of allegiance.
Sally Wadhams, subbing for Kris, reminded us to celebrate our individual and mutual
togetherness.
Eric did his best to lead our unruly group in the recitation of the Rotary 4-Way Test.
 
Announcements:
• Today’s guests include Mary Warner, a new Shelburne resident who read about today’s
meeting in the Front Porch Forum, Andrew Beech and Chris Steward of the Williston Rotary
Club, and today’s speakers Dave Connery and Lynne Jaunich of the Champlain Valley School
District.

• The Williston Rotary Club is sponsoring their 23rd Annual Rotary Ski/RIde Challenge at
Bolton Valley Resort on Friday, 9 March. Registration at 3 PM, race begins at 5:30 PM, with
Dinner at 6:30 PM in the Main Lodge. Our club has long participated and won the last 2
years. Interested skiers/riders make yourselves known.
• Shelburne is hosting a Blood Drive at the Town Center on Wednesday, 28 Feb, 11 AM-4 PM.
• Roz invited members to a talk by author Willard Sterne Randall about his latest book,
Unshackling of America, “How the War of 1812 Truly Ended the American Revolution”, next
Monday, 19 Feb, 7PM, in the Shelburne Town Hall (attached to the Pierson Library).
 
Happy Dollar Highlights:
• There was a profusion of happiness in general and in particular over John Hammer’s
surprisingly quick return to action. SAA Chris Davis happily collected happy fines.
• Happiness, at least at Carol Obuchowski’s table, was redoubled when she deftly drew the
50/50 pot winning card worth $650 and splitting the prize with her 5 very happy table-mates.
 
Today’s program:
• George Schiavone introduced today’s program speakers, Dave Connery, chair of the
Champlain Valley School District (CVSD) Board, and Lynne Jaunich, chair of the CVSD
Finance Committee.
• The CVSD is the newly consolidated entity supervising the 6 schools in the 5 towns of
Charlotte, Hinesburg, Shelburne, St. George, and Williston. The CVSD has 3,867 K-12
students and the Board has proposed a budget of $76.8 million for school year 2018-2019.
