Today’s meeting was facilitated by John Payne, Co-President while Amanda Vincent, Co-President participated virtually due to illness.  We went over the upcoming calendar, introduced guests and heard from everyone with regard to their Happy Fines!  The group saved a little time and was able to hear a little early from Larry Lewack, a town planner that has worked closely with the town of Charlotte on its development of the two villages they have designated in their town plan.

Charlotte is building upon its recent state designation of its two historic village centers by doing a ‘deep dive’ into its land use regulations to identify and remove zoning barriers, and evaluate needed infrastructure to enable higher density development (including affordable housing) in the villages of their rural community.  Together Charlotte plans to develop a shared vision for more vibrant and diverse Villages, support the vital natural resources and traditional land uses that sustain the community, identify new infrastructure that is needed to support wise development and land stewardship, remove regulatory barriers to sound and community supported development, and attract and retain the types of uses that Charlotte wants.

Larry described the political discussions of the past along with the many challenges facing Vermont’s rural communities as they wrestle with a future that could help provide more opportunities for affordable housing and diversity.

Jim Donovan presented Larry Lewak with the book titled, “The Death and Life of Great American Cities” which will be given to the Charlotte Library in Larry’s name.
